Want to hear something mildly annoying? Dark Souls for the PC is going to use Microsoft's Games for Windows system. The little I've seen of the service, it sucks and it's going to be a little bit of a chore to look at it again if I plan to play Dark Souls on the PC. This is the internet, however, and there's a long list of things we despise. Top of that list: minor inconveniences.
A petition which has managed to garner almost 10,000 online signatures asks for Games for Windows to be dropped from the title and for support for Steam to be implemented instead.
"GFWL is unpopular, difficult to use, inconvenient, has terrible online support (a key feature in Dark Souls), and is downright unpleasant," the petition reads. "After anxiously awaiting a PC release for this fantastic game it feels like a real slap in the face hearing Dark Souls will use Games for Windows Live. We recommend Valve's Steamworks in place, as this DRM is much easier to use, less intrusive, more reliable, and more accepted among PC gamers."
The only thing I see here is 10,000 people who obviously don't live in the real world. Something tells me that the port was probably paid for, at least in part, by Microsoft in return for it being exclusively for the Games for Windows brand and second guessing the developer to the point at which it seems you don't think they've ever heard of Steam makes you look naive. There's more to this than "gee, gamers love Games for Windows, don't they?" and acting like the developer has made a cute faux pas they can fix before release date isn't being realistic.
