The 1.3 update to Terraria has finally arrived, and includes tons of new items to wire-up with the wiring system. Thanks to logic gates and other mechanisms, it’s possible to create even more complex devices in your 2D world — and as much fun as all that is, sometimes it’s worth going back and living socially. Although the 1.3 update doesn’t add any new NPCs, it does change some of the rules of the world, and with so many people returning to Terraria, why not look into the complicated process it takes to get NPCs to move in.
Instead of making things too complicated, here you’ll find simplified versions of instructions, with a little pertinent information to help you decide if these NPCs are worth the time. Naturally, we think it’s in your best interest to get them all — even Santa Claus. Learn all the steps and triggers in the full list of currently available NPCs below.
Many NPCs will only appear in Hardmode, and one NPC (the Cyborg) is your only ticket to getting the Portal Gun Station. Learn all about Hardmode and pet Companion Cubes on the Terraria Portal Easter eggs guide.
How to Get Every NPC to Move In
There are 22 NPCs currently available in Terraria — the number varies depending on which platform you’re playing on, with the PC version being the most up-to-date. There are:
- On PC: 22 NPCs
- On Mobile: 21 NPCs
- On Console: 20 NPCs
NPCs serve a number of purposes and appear in your large home, town, fortress, or base after certain requirements are met. Before attempting to collect NPCs, you’ll want to construct proper housing first.
NPC Housing
Even if you complete the requirements to summon the NPCs below, they won’t appear until the right combination of elements exist in your home.
- Elements of an NPC ‘House’
- Any frame enclosed by blocks.
- The space must be 8×6 dimensions.
- Background walls filled in completely.
- Any light source.
- A piece of furniture.
- A flat surface item.
Check the Housing Menu to see whether a space is a suitable home for an NPC. Houses cannot be located near Corruption or Crimson, and if the biome spreads too close, an NPC may move out. The Housing Menu also allows you to rearrange where NPCs live using flags.
Certain NPCs like the Traveling Merchant do not require homes to visit your base.

Follow these steps and requirements to summon NPCs to your world. NPCs can be housed in different biomes for unique vendor items. NPC homes can be placed in any location above-ground. NPCs will respawn a day later if they are killed.
