You might not realize it, but there are multiple games being worked on right now that will take place in the Marvel Comics universe. Many of them are focusing on singular characters, like the upcoming EA Motive title starring Iron Man. However, in the case of Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, the game will focus on multiple characters in the universe and deliver a unique narrative experience through it. While there has only been one official trailer for the title so far, a new batch of information has just dropped from one of the game’s heads, and she promises a true journey through the Marvel world.
Skydance Games head Amy Hennig did a chat with Entertainment Weekly and noted how the game will allow a special look at Marvel’s version of Earth during this time period and show more of the characters that we take for granted because of other depictions:
“It led us to tap into all the things that I love, all of the wonderful tropes of World War II-era adventure films, classic men-on-a-mission movies and all of that. There’s a lot of intrigue in our story, a lot of twists and turns, fascinating characters, and interesting locations.”
One of those “interesting locations” is none other than Wakanda. Due to the secretive state of the game’s plot regarding how certain characters get brought into the fight, we don’t know much about how Azzari, the current Black Panther, leaves Wakanda to go to Europe. However, Hennig did tease what Wakanda would be like back in the 1940s:
“Wakanda at this point in time is hidden away from the outside world and protected by this impenetrable jungle. They are non-interventionist, but events transpire that pull them into the conflict. They have to protect their interests. The world is getting smaller. No satellites yet, but there will be soon. You can shoot down planes that maybe want to fly over Wakanda, but how long can you stay in the shadows?”
In other canons, we know that Wakanda uses its advanced technology via cloaking and other measures to stay hidden. Perhaps, though, in this version of Marvel’s Earth, they rely on more basic measures, and that’s why the German threat in World War II is something they can’t ignore.
Either way, the Black Panther will meet, and eventually clash, with Captain America, but those won’t be the only characters you play in Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra. Other details reveal that you will also get to play as one of the Howling Commandos, as well as a Wakandan spy.
