For years, we saw very poorly made adaptations of video game franchises. The move to get these games made into a movie or television series was tough. They often missed the charm that made these video games so beloved. That’s since changed, and we’re seeing some solid adaptations released. However, one adaptation that might have raised some eyebrows years ago was scrapped before it could get off the ground. That adaptation was George A. Romero’s Resident Evil.
If you don’t know, it was back in the 1990s when Capcom contacted George A. Romero to film a live-action commercial for their Resident Evil 2 game. It’s noted that this commercial only aired in Japan and appealed to Capcom. After all, George A. Romero is such an iconic name in horror, along with really putting zombies on the modern-day map. So, who better to give the reigns to for a full live-action adaptation of Resident Evil?
The story goes that Capcom reached out to George in hopes that he would direct a film. Several weeks passed, and the filmmaker offered a script based on the first game’s storyline. However, Capcom wasn’t pleased with his ideas and ultimately scrapped the project. Now, we’re getting a documentary to hopefully open up about what this film would have been like and George’s vision for a Resident Evil movie.
Thanks to Bloody Disgusting, we learned today that George A. Romero’s Resident Evil is a documentary film that will be distributed by Uncork’d Entertainment. It will be released on January 7, 2025, and will be available on both digital and on-demand services.
The film will explore George’s visions and include interviews with people involved with the production to understand why this movie was never made. For fans of the Resident Evil franchise, we’re sure this documentary will be appealing once it releases early next year.
As for the video game franchise, we’re in limbo. We don’t know what is coming out next, although there is speculation that this next release will continue the storyline with Resident Evil 9 rather than Capcom offering another remake release.
