These games don’t have to be accurate, but they are set in some historical periods. Check out what’s coming our way in 2025.
#12 Noble’s Life: Kingdom Reborn

We teased this game a bit earlier, and now we get to talk about Noble’s Life: Kingdom Reborn.
The game puts you in the role of a noble during the worst period of your life. After fighting for their king, their lands have been destroyed, including their manor. Now, you’re itching to rebuild, but how you do it and how you command the people within your care is up to you.
Will you not just build back your home but build the lands around you into some of the most fruitful places around? Or will you focus on safety and ensuring that no one attacks your lands again? It’s your choice.
#11 Roman Empire Wars

What was it like to find in the days of the world’s greatest empires? What was it like to command vast legions of soldiers and have them fight for your honor and the honor of the empire they served? If you’ve wondered these questions, then play Roman Empire Wars and find out the answers!
The game puts you as an Emperor of Rome during its peak. But just because you’re at the prime of your power doesn’t mean there aren’t enemies all around you. You’ll need to form and command the Roman Legions to fight against these hordes of enemies and show them why you’re the dominant ruler of this land!
#10 Classified: France ’44

Not all wars are fought on sweeping battlefields with all manner of weaponry at your disposal. In Classified: France ’44, you’ll take a different place in the war as part of the French resistance.
Desperate to usurp the German invaders, you’ll place as resistance fighters intermixed with a group of spec ops soldiers from the US. Together, you’ll go from place to place and sabotage German outposts, supply lines, barracks, and so on.
Along the way, you can recruit more people into your ranks to help fight the good fight! But be wary! The Germans will adapt to your tactics and fight back. So don’t get cocky!
#9 Ertugrul of Ulukayin

Not all historical games are meant to be taken with full “historical accuracy.” For example, you can have games like Ertugrul of Ulukayin, which is REALLY hard to say, where it’s set in a certain historical period, but delves into things that are far greater than history itself.
In this case, you’ll play a man who has protected his tribe from a Mongolian invasion, only to find himself wrapped up in a mystery surrounding his brother and those who are blanketing the world in darkness.
With trusted allies by your side, you’ll search for the truth and fight for humanity on levels you could’ve never predicted would happen before.
#8 Titan Quest II

Have you ever wanted to become a “Greek legend” and show your skills against the gods themselves? In Titan Quest II, you’ll get that chance! The corrupt goddess Nemesis is on a rampage and is using the mighty Thread of Fate to doom her opposers. By the way, YOU are one of her opposers!
As you travel against a special version of Greece, you’ll take on monsters big and small and will have to prove yourself worthy of the fight. There are numerous ways to take on this world, and there are many secrets to be found if you know where to look. Seek out the best path forward, and save the day!
#7 Pompeii: The Legacy

You might be thinking, “Why would we play this game when we know how Pompeii ends?” That’s the twist with Pompeii: The Legacy, though, it’s not about the city BEFORE the volcano claimed it, it’s about what happened after in this alternative take on history.
In this case, you are asked by the Roman Empire to rebuild the city of Pompeii. That won’t be easy, for obvious reasons, but you’ll be able to take on the challenge in multiple ways to try and recreate what was lost.
As time passes, your offspring will continue your challenge, and you’ll see just how far your own legacy can grow and expand the legacy of Pompeii.
#6 Dynasty Warriors: Origins

For those who love this franchise, this upcoming entry feels like something special, like it’s going to “rewind the clock” in the best way possible while also honing in on what made the series so famous in the first place. Dynasty Warriors: Origins takes things all the way back to the original conflict involving the Three Kingdoms. You are the “nameless hero” who will go forth and bring peace to the land.
You know, after taking the lives of thousands upon thousands of soldiers. Guide your allies in battle and take key points on the battlefield so you can secure your victory! History awaits your next move.
#5 Anno 117

Who hasn’t wondered what it would be like to not only live in Rome during its peak but to help guide it throughout history? Anno 117 will give you a chance to do just that and, perhaps, make history better as a result. You’ll start your journey by becoming a Roman governor, one who presides over two provinces. Your goal is simple: to look over them and ensure that nothing goes wrong while also making Rome look good in the process.
This is where your choices come into play. Will you follow the law of Rome and rule with an iron fist? Or will you seek another path to see if there is a better way? It’s your choice, governor.
#4 Builders of Egypt

When it comes to Egypt, it’s a nation that has had thousands of years of history to build off of, and that means there’s plenty of “jumping on points” for places like video games to have fun with. For example, in Builders of Egypt, you’ll go all the way back to “Old Egypt” and start building the empire that we know of now, while dealing with everything that comes with being a governor.
You’ll not just be building cities; you’ll be working with them to make things efficient so that your economy can grow. You’ll need to manage trade, keep the religion going, and more. Time will pass quickly, and your efforts will determine how successful Egypt becomes.
#3 Assassin’s Creed Shadows

You might not think that video games are “historical” at times outside of being set during certain time periods, but that’s only scratching the surface of what some titles do. For example, in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, you actually do get to play as a fictionalized version of a legendary Samurai named Yasuke. Furthermore, the locations and set pieces within the game are meant to be historical so you can “truly feel like you’re there.”
Now, yes, the gameplay and how the story unfolds is fiction in many respects, but don’t let that get in the way of you having a good time while you’re playing.
#2 Kingdom Come Deliverance 2

We know that some games will tell you they’re ‘historically-based’ in one form or the next but stretch things to the limits. Kingdom Come Deliverance II isn’t that bad, but it obviously has some things that aren’t “exactly historical” while being accurate in other measures. For example, the game does try to recreate the period of 15th-century Europe. That means that things have a “medieval flavor” to them, and you’ll experience that throughout the title.
One thing the team tried to keep authentic was the style of combat. Whether you battle on foot with swords or ride on horseback, you’ll have to have the proper skills to come out on top. So dive in and see what happens!
#1 Sid Meier’s Civilization VII

One cannot simply talk about “historical games” without talking about Sid Meier’s Civilization VII, which will likely elevate the world-building genre to new heights. That might seem like a bold statement, but that’s what this franchise has done many times over, especially with its last entry.
The gameplay will still be what you expect. You’ll start out by picking a civilization from dozens of options, then go forth and attempt to create a nation like no other. Create new technologies, build numerous cities, and defend yourself from other nations who appear. It’s your path through history, so enjoy it!
Plus, Gwendoline Christie is narrating the whole thing, which means you are in for a glorious time.
