Undisputed Devs Offers Insight Behind Bringing Boxing Legends To The Game

October 2, 2024 by Dennis Patrick

Steel City Interactive wants an authentic boxing experience for fans to enjoy.

We don’t often get boxing games, so titles like Undisputed gain quite a bit of attention. This is an upcoming boxing game that has been worked on for several years now. Initially, you might recall the game with its former name, eSports Boxing Club. With Undisputed being released this month, the developers are offering some insight into how they brought these iconic legends, old and new, into the game.

Taking to the PlayStation Blog, Ash Habib, the CEO of Steel City Interactive, spoke of how the game will feature over 70 iconic prizefighters in the roster. However, bringing these athletes into the game wasn’t easy. They all needed to look like themselves, carry over their stats, and look like how they would typically fight in the ring.

It was noted that all the roster fighters were first sculpted out, and how this was handled came with the help of scanning studios worldwide. Using different angles, the developers were able to make a model that reflected every muscle, vein, and hair. That’s great for fighters already in their prime, but there were some extra steps for legendary icons past their prime.

The developers had to undergo a de-aging process for these fighters. This included eliminating wrinkles and body fat and ensuring the correct eye shape, lip volume, cheekbones, and ear size.

Now that the visuals are correct, motion capture was required. Developers could get some of these fighters into the studio to record their footwork, punches, slips, dodges, and even taunts. Those who could not stop in, such as iconic legends that have since left us, were captured with the help of Dlaton Smith. It’s noted that this British and Commonwealth Super-Lightweight Champion was able to mimic some of these fighters so they can be immortalized in Undisputed.

It’ll be interesting to see how this game holds up, especially since it is the first licensed boxing game since Fight Night Champion, which launched in 2011. Players will be able to get a copy of the game on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S platforms when it launches on October 11, 2024. That said, it’s worth pointing out that Undisputed can be enjoyed now through Steam early access.
