Yesterday, we reported on a rumor that Blizzard is making a new unannounced AAA FPS RPG. Today, a fan has rounded up what information that we may already know about this game.
This originally comes from the Blizzard subreddit, thanks to user Neggy5. It certainly looks like this subreddit is a work in progress too, so we may have to check back on it sometime in the future, as new information comes to light. Hopefully, Blizzard could make an official announcement sometime.
So we know that King are making AA games of Blizzard’s existing IPs, and that there was a cancelled Blizzard survival game called Odyssey. We can rule out that this is either of these projects.
As we covered yesterday, this project came up in the LinkedIn for Overwatch 2 product manager Chris McCabe. That listing suggested that Chris worked on both projects at the same time, but there isn’t enough information to confirm or deny that it is related to Overwatch itself.
Other job listings indicate that this FPS RPG is also a mission based open world game. Furthermore, it will have co-op missions.
Apparently, they have identified Dan Hay as the general manager and VP for this unannounced game. Hay was an executive in charge of the Far Cry franchise at Ubisoft. Neggy5 suggests that Hay is in the same position here as Rod Fergusson was when he became lead for Diablo 4.
Hay had been working on the game since 2022, but a certain number of employees had been newly hired for this game in this year’s spring and summer seasons.
So that’s all we have so far. Jason Schreier claims to have a hint about this game in his next upcoming book. In which case, we’re likely to learn considerably more about it after the book’s release, as Schreier feels he is free to divulge more information. We can probably expect even newer information to come to light after the book’s publication.
Blizzard choosing not to announce this new game next may be coming from several things. Perhaps the big one is they don’t want to deal with the reaction from Overwatch 2 players who may still feel disheartened that they are no longer getting the PvE content at the scale that they were originally promised.
But it may also be the same situation that other games in development have. It may simply be the case that this RPG FPS is still very early in development, that they’re still not sure if they’ll be able to release it. For that matter, the game may end up in a completely different state when Blizzard finally releases it.
In any case, Blizzard is one of those big game companies who will always have fans willing to try out anything they make. Even when they’ve had missteps before, they have such a reputation that fans will take the risk to buy their games, succeed or fail. If they have been working on it for two years now, it must be a really good idea to make it worthwhile. We can’t wait to find out what this game eventually will be when the official announcement from Blizzard comes.
