Are you ready for some big worlds to explore in 2024? If so, you’ll want to check out our Open World Games 2024 list!
Update: We will continue to update this list periodically throughout the year, so you will likely see some games removed or added. These games are not ranked in any particular order, as the focus here is to showcase titles we are excited to see hit the marketplace.
#19 Enshrouded
Welcome to Embervale! However, you shouldn’t exactly be excited to be here. After all, the realm is not what it once was. Greed and lust for power turned it into a land that is covered in a fog and is full of monsters that will kill you if you give them the chance.
You have the ability to change this realm, but you have to start from scratch. You’ll travel around, gaining supplies and fighting beasts so you can build yourself up. Along the way, you’ll slowly piece together what truly happened to this world and whether there is any way to fix it.
You are the master of your own fate, so dive in and see where it takes you!
#18 V Rising
We’ll admit that V Rising isn’t an open-world game in the traditional sense, but it’s one that offers a wide area to go through on your quest for power. In the title, you play a vampire who has awoken from a long slumber, only to find that your castle and kingdom are gone, and you’re not as powerful as you once were. Obviously, you’re going to try and fix that.
You’ll build up your castle from scratch and then use your vampiric powers to conscript helpers and take down foes. The kind of vampire lord you choose to be will reflect how world events occur, so be mindful of each choice you take and each bite you make.
#17 The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom
There are many reasons to be excited about The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, and one of them is the new version of Hyrule you’ll explore! Just as important, you won’t be playing the game as Link but as Princess Zelda! When Link, Zelda’s father, and other citizens of Hyrule are sucked into a place known as the “Still World,” Zelda will have to work together with the spirit Tri to figure out the truth behind what’s going on and how to free everyone.
While you explore this massive version of Hyrule, you’ll come across numerous familiar species and get to help them with their own problems!
#16 7 Days to Die
There are numerous games out there for which the size of their own world is part of the allure. In 7 Days to Die, you’ll be put into a massive space alongside numerous other players and asked to survive. That wouldn’t be too hard if it weren’t for the undead that happens to roam around and the fact that the other players might not be nice to you!
So, you’ll have to craft, scavenge, steal, whatever it takes, all so you can survive and see just how long you can last in this place. Survival is not a guarantee here, so don’t take anything for granted!
#15 Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut
For PC fans, the Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut is something they’ve been looking forward to for a while. After all, many feel that this game from Sucker Punch is one of the greatest games ever created, and it’s not hard to see why. So, when you get an extended edition of a masterpiece? You tend to take notice of it.
In the title, you’ll play a lone Samurai who attempts to save an island from invasion. He’ll wander around, fighting foes, helping the local people, and more, all so he can complete his mission. This game is majestic from top to bottom, so if you haven’t played it yet, you should really fix that!
#14 Sons Of The Forest
While many people appreciate an open area, that feeling tends to go away when you realize you’re sharing that open world with a bunch of monsters! In Sons Of The Forest, you’re brought to an island to locate a billionaire who seemingly has gotten lost on it. However, not long after you arrive, everything goes wrong. You’re suddenly trapped there, and you find there are more than just animals living there.
Instead, there are mutants, cannibals, and more that are perfectly fine with taking you down. You’ll need to withstand not only them but the elements themselves so that you can make it out alive.
#13 The Planet Crafter
How about something a bit more relaxing while also being totally sci-fi? In The Planet Crafter, you’ll have the chance to go with friends to a barren planet and attempt to remake it into something fresh and beautiful. How are you going to do that? Simple, you’ll terraform the place from top to bottom!
Obviously, it won’t be as simple as just pointing a tool at the ground and watching life spring forth, you’ll have to do some work. For example, you’ll need to use the natural resources of the worlds to your benefit. Then, you’ll need to build a base for you and your crew to rest and protect yourselves from the elements.
However, if everything works out like you want it to, you’ll have a beautiful planet to enjoy staying on!
#12 Gray Zone Warfare
Platform: PC
Release Date: 2024
You might think Gray Zone Warfare is “just another war title,” but there is plenty of nuance here to go around. The title puts you on an open island where a “mysterious event” took place. In the aftermath, a trio of private military companies were sent in to try to find out more and get anything valuable back to their employers. Nothing suspicious about that!
You’ll pick the group you want to be in, design your weapons, and then head out to defeat members of the other two groups so you can come out on top. Damage will be very realistic, so maintain yourself so you can keep fighting when the heat is on!
#11 Lightyear Frontier
Platform: PC XSX|S Xbox One
Release Date: 2024
What’s an open-world genre without at least one farming game? That’s what we thought. In Lightyear Frontier, you’ll have the ability to go to an alien world and set up a farm unlike any other!
You’ll grow crops of alien origin. Be able to use advanced technology to keep your plants alive. Then, you can explore the mysterious planet you’re on and see what mysteries and histories it has to unveil as you travel!
Plus, build a home that suits your needs! After all, you should be comfortable on the planet you’re working on, right?
Oh, and did we mention the mech you can get and upgrade?
#10 Everywhere
Platform: PC XSX|S PS5
Release Date: 2024
The game known as Everywhere is aiming to be something truly special and unique, which a lot of games are TRYING to be right now, but few are actually succeeding in.
In the game, well, we’re actually not sure of all that it is going to be. We know that the reveal trailer showed off a cyberpunk-style city, one that has a lot of unique characters and stories apparently going to be told in it. The team are being a bit coy but saying that a “metaverse” kind of experience can be felt in the title.
We know there will at least be one main character, if not more. But hopefully, more about this massive game will be revealed soon.
#9 Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown
Platform: PC XSX|S Switch PS5
Release Date: 2024
Racing games have been embracing more open-world concepts for a while now, and Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown is going to be one to look out for in 2024 as a result. The game intends to bank on the modern advances in technology to grant you the best experiences possible.
You’ll get to play the game your way in terms of how you look, the cars you drive, and how you drive them. You can focus on the championships that are out there, or, you can go and just drive around Hong Kong Island in order to just hang loose. You can even bring your friends in and race with them.
With a bunch of cars and places to drive, you’ll definitely like this title.
#8 The Lost Wild
Platform: PC
Release Date: 2024
What would you do if you were stranded on an island full of dinosaurs and didn’t have the means to get off right away? That’s what you’ll have to discover in The Lost Wild. You’ll awaken on a dino-filled isle, and the only way off is to go deeper inland to figure out the truth and find a way out.
But to do so means going up against dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures. These aren’t the monsters you know and fear from other games and media. These are creatures that act like natural beings.
So run when you see them, intimidate them to scare them off, or hold your ground and hope they walk away on their own accord.
#7 Once Human
Platform: PC
Release Date: 2024
Many post-apocalyptic stories feature various things happening to humans and the struggle to survive. But in Once Human, you’ll find out that humanity was just one of the things infected by a strange alien presence known as Stardust. It has touched everything in the world, and you must decide whether you risk further infection and loss of sanity or try to survive without food or water.
Due to your unique abilities, you can be the one to save the world by using Stardust to your advantage. But given everything that is out there waiting for you, will you be able to survive it all?
#6 Nightingale
Platform: PC
Release Date: February 22, 2024
Nightingale is a game that encourages players to craft their own way to freedom while exploring the endless realms that lie ahead of them. You are a RealmWalker, and after being sealed away from your home, you might seek out the mythical place known as Nightingale to rejoin the remnants of humanity.
But there are many realms between you and that respite, so you’ll need to craft weapons to defeat the creatures that await. But fear not! You do not have to take on this fight alone. You can play the game in co-op and see how well you fair as a group.
#5 S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl
Platform: PC XSX|S
Release Date: 2024
The Stalker franchise is actually a bit larger than you might realize, and the only reason we haven’t gotten S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl already is due to real-world events. As a result, the hype for this game will continue to build as time ticks towards its release.
And it’s aiming to be one of the most expansive versions of the franchise yet, including remolding the exclusion zone that we’ve been in during the last few games. You’ll play as a Stalker who is once again trying to make their living by what is there, and trying to survive the other Stalkers, as well as mutant monsters, who are trying to get in your way.
#4 Rise of the Ronin
Platform: PS5
Release Date: 2024
Team Ninja’s next major game release is Rise of the Ronin. This game will throw players into the 19th century as a ronin in Japan. During this time period in history, Japan goes through a series of challenges. Civil war, diseases, and western interests should create a compelling backdrop for the video game. So far, we know that players will embark on a dark journey and help shape the narrative as they progress through the campaign. Gameplay looks to be quite action-packed as well. Since this is taking part in the 19th century, you’re not only using a variety of blades when attacking an enemy but also guns appropriate for that period.
#3 Dragon Age: The Veilguard
Platform: PC XSX|S PS5
Release Date: 2024
Those of you who know the situation, or in this case, situations, going on with Bioware know that it’s anyone’s guess whether Dragon Age: The Veilguard will be good. This is one of their “classic franchises,” and they’re known to make good entries in this series, but gamers have been burned before.
We know that the game will focus on the tale of Solas, aka the “Dreadwolf,” who once separated realms to keep the peace. But, now he’s looking to destroy the realms, and it’s up to you to stop him from doing that.
A classic RPG experience awaits you, and you’ll get to be the character you want to be. So have fun, so long as the game actually comes out…
#2 Palworld
Platform: PC Xbox One XSX|S
Release Date: January 19, 2024 (early access)
Ah, the open-world games are known for their excellence…
Well, not really; many of them are quite barren and boring, so you need something to make it worth playing another, right? That’s where Palworld comes in. This world is filled with various creatures to capture and have fun with. Or put them to work endlessly so you don’t have to raise a finger.
Just as important, you can ride around on these “Pals” so you can reach new parts of the world. You never know what might be around that next corner or within a cave, so make sure you have the right Pals to protect you!
#1 Star Wars Outlaws
Platform: PC XSX|S PS5
Release Date: 2024
A more recent release, Star Wars Outlaws, puts you in the scoundrel shoes of Kay Vess, who must attempt to pull off a massive heist to get the freedom she’s long sought. However, it won’t be easy, and she’ll need to travel to many parts of the galaxy far, far away to learn the skills needed to complete this challenge.
You’ll search these massive areas to find experts who can help train you. Through their skills, you’ll unlock new ways to complete missions and get around terrain. Will it be enough for you to pull of your heist? You’ll have to play to find out!
