We now know when the next chapter in the Gears of War universe begins. October 11, Gears of War 4 will drop onto the Xbox One, with a multiplayer beta that begins this month.
The news was broken this morning by a post from Major Nelson, and also reveals that beginning on April 18, fans who played Gears of War: Ultimate Eidition on Xbox One or Windows 10 will be able to join the beta on Xbox One. The beta will then expand to all Xbox Live Gold Members starting on April 25.
Gears of War 4 was announced back at E3 2016 and marks the first new game in the series since 2003’s Gears of War Judgement. Now developed by The Coalition, Gears of War 4 stars JD Fenix, the son of Marcus Fenix, and is set 25 years after the events of Gears 3.
Fenix won’t be the only focal point of the story though, he’s joined by two other new characters in Kait Diaz and Delmont “Del” Walker. The game will take place over the course of a 24 hour period on the planet Sera and is said to once again feature the COG, but in addition will also feature another group known as the Outsiders, who are the people who live outside the walls of the city in this new Post-Locust era.
Coalition studio head Rod Fergusson has also said that Gears 4 will run at 1080p at 30 FPS during the campaign, but 60 FPS during multiplayer.
While it was mostly expected that the release date would fall around October, the news about the multiplayer beta beginning this month, with a one week head start for those who played Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, is unexpected and awesome. It won’t be long before we start revving up our lancers and making good friends with waist high walls once again.
