As many of you know, sometimes the best games in history aren’t the ones that everyone has hyped up to oblivion and beyond. Instead, the best ones can be the titles no one sees coming. Ones that are talked about via word-of-mouth alone and are discussed because of how amazing they are. Valve has had many hit games over the years, but the Portal franchise is one they came across by accident. A group of students got the attention of one of Valve’s team after they made a game, and they were quickly hired to create a successor to it. The title was a hit, had a Game of the Year sequel, and now, Portal RTX will take the game to the next level.
Just so we’re clear, Portal RTX isn’t a new game, nor is it something you buy in the traditional sense. Valve announced earlier this year that they had teamed up with RTX to support the beloved game. As the trailer below will show, it’ll come free for Steam owners of the original title. The RTX support will allow the game to run at a framerate unheard of when it was first released in 2007. We’re talking over 100 FPS at times, plus it’ll also have a visual boost. That’s why some are labeling this as a “remaster” of the game.
If you don’t own the title yet, you can get it on Steam for $.99, that’s a steal in every sense of the word, and you’d be foolish not to jump on that deal if you haven’t tried the game before. So get it now, and when you get the free update, you’ll arguably get to play the best version of the title.
Of course, while this update is significant, it’s not all fans want. Fans for years have been clamoring for one thing, Portal 3. The original sequel game, as noted, was Game of the Year in many people’s minds. The puzzle gameplay was refined to an extraordinary degree, and the addition of a co-op campaign mode made it even better. So fans were curious about what Valve would do with a third mainline title, but it never happened. Crossovers happened, but not an actual third game.
Fans will undoubtedly hope that this upgrade will be a sign of things to come, but Valve has been mum on any such thing. Still, if you haven’t played the original Portal, now is the perfect time to do so.
