Pirates responsible for Epic’s shift to console-first development

May 18, 2010 by Gameranx Staff

Epic games president reveals the reason behind the company’s shift of focus from PCs to consoles

Epic games Mike Capps

Epic games president, Mike Capps, has made an open statement regarding the state of piracy in the PC gaming community by claiming that “the money’s on console” and that ‘piracy’ has been one of the reason why Epic games has shifted from being a PC-centric developer to a Console-first developer.

Epic games is well known for its Unreal Tournament games but has recently been very successful with the Gears of War franchise and is also working on an upcoming FPS, Bulletstorm, due 2011 for the PC, PS3 and the Xbox 360.

Speaking to Edge in an interview, Mike said,

If you walked into [Epic’s Offices] six years ago, Epic was a PC company. We did one PS2 launch title, and everything else was PC. And now, people are saying
Why do you hate the PC? You’re a console-only company.
And guess what? It’s because the money’s on console.
We still do PC, we still love the PC, but we already saw the impact of piracy: it killed a lot of great independent developers and completely changed our business model.
So, maybe Facebook will save PC gaming, but it’s not going to look like Gears of War.
