Fallout 4’s Automatron DLC Features “Pokémon-esque” Gameplay

February 23, 2016 by Ian Miles Cheong

Here’s everything you need to know about Fallout 4’s first DLC.

Fallout 4
is set to see waves of downloadable content released this year. As part of the game’s DLC Season Pass, gamers will get $60 worth of DLC spread out over the next few months. The first wave of DLC was revealed last week, with basic details about what players can expect.

The developer says it has plans to release more than $60 worth of new Fallout adventures and content throughout the year.

Speaking in an interview with GameInformer today, game director Todd Howard revealed the studio’s philosophy for its DLC plans.

He stated that they went into the game deciding to do all types of DLC at all price points. With the first run, they wanted to have a little bit of everything.

The first DLC, Automatron, features an extensive kill-collect-and-build system that fits on top of the core game.

“The first one Automatron has a little quest line and this Pokémon-esque ‘kill robots, get their parts, build your own’ [gameplay]. The robot building is really deep. It’s great,” said Howard.

The second DLC, Wasteland Workshop, lets players build their own Thunderdome-style arena by capturing animals and pitting them against each other. It lets players do a whole lot more than what is currently possible with the game’s in-game Workshop.

The Far Harbor DLC introduces an all new landmass for the player to explore and quest in. It’s essentially similar to the story and area expansions in Fallout 3 and Skyrim.

Howard says that with previous games, they announced and produced new content one at a time. This time, they’re working on all three at once, as they fit different niches, with different teams on each DLC.

The new content is all in addition to the Survival Mode currently in development. Todd Howard revealed that official modding support will also be added to the game in-between DLC releases.
