Final Fantasy VII Remake Powered by Unreal Engine 4

December 7, 2015 by Ian Miles Cheong

Epic Games reveals that the FFVII Remake is being powered by their engine.

Epic Games has announced today that its Unreal Engine 4 is being used to power Square Enix's upcoming Final Fantasy VII Remake. The game was fully unveiled, replete with gameplay footage, during the PlayStation Experience event this past weekend, giving everyone a first look at the title.

“We realize how special FINAL FANTASY VII is to fans, and we place our trust in Unreal Engine 4 technology and tools to help deliver this long-awaited remake, crafted for modern platforms,” said Yoshinori Kitase at Square Enix. “Working with the team at Epic and having their support throughout this process was invaluable and we’re excited to bring the product of that collaboration to long-time fans and newcomers to the series.”

"We’re humbled that Square Enix has chosen Unreal Engine 4 to recreate one of the world’s most beloved video games of all time,” said Taka Kawasaki, territory manager for Epic Games Japan. “It is a joy to work with the talented developers behind the franchise, and this marks an unforgettable moment in Unreal Engine history.”

The game's developers also announced that it will be released in episodes.

Originally released in 1997, Final Fantasy VII went on to become one of the most beloved RPGs ever made, and is regarded as a hallmark of the genre, receiving praise for its storyline, characters, and cinematic sequences long before other titles adopted these elements. It has sold 11 million copies worldwide, and spawned a spin-off film and merchandise.
