There are a number of achievements in Supermassive’s interactive horror movie The Quarry which require you to make certain specific events happen in the game’s story. One of them is Nobody’s Fool, where you can get Jacob to make a painfully awkward confession to Emma.
It’s harder to make that happen than you might think, however, especially since there’s a good chance one or both of them might end up dead. Here’s how to engineer a long-overdue honest conversation between Jacob and Emma.

Dude, She’s Definitely Not Into You Now: How to Unlock Nobody’s Fool
Like any other discussion of mid- to late-game events in The Quarry, this is going to involve a lot of major spoilers, as well as how to solve the Chapter 8 fusebox puzzle.
You probably aren’t going to just luck into a Nobody’s Fool run. Jacob’s really easy to get killed on a blind trip through the game, and more importantly, you need to set up a specific set of circumstances that isn’t entirely intuitive.
In a game like The Quarry, though, it’s important to add this disclaimer: this is one way to do it that worked for me. There may be other methods of getting this done, but this is how I got it to happen with an early press copy of the game.
With that said, your goal to set up a Nobody’s Fool run is for both Jacob and Emma to survive until Chapter 10. Emma must be bitten and infected by Max on her escape from the island in Chapter 4, while Jacob must evade infection entirely.
It’s possible to get Nobody’s Fool on a zero-death run, but it can be tricky. Part of implementing this sequence of events means you’ll end up facing one of The Quarry‘s tougher combat scenes, where failure means a character will die. If you’re also trying to keep everyone alive, you may want to turn auto-aim on in the Accessibility settings before this point.
Conversely, no other character’s survival or lack thereof seems to be explicitly attached to the Nobody’s Fool route. As long as both Jacob and Emma survive, everybody else is expendable as far as the achievement is concerned. One way or another, this conversation doesn’t happen without a body count, but it’s your decision about how high it rises.
What to Do With Jacob
The first trick with Jacob is just getting him to live through the game, as he’s arguably the single easiest counselor to kill on a blind run. The real sticking point is Chapter 8, but even before then, he’s got a couple of really dumb death flags that pop up as early as Chapter 4.
The second is to make sure he gets through the chase sequence in Chapter 6 without getting killed or infected. This seems to be virtually guaranteed if you let Bobby pour blood on Jacob in Chapter 3, by letting the “throw dirt” interrupt (below) time out. If he’s “blooded,” you can go so far as to deliberately botch the stealth challenge as Jacob in Chapter 6 and the werewolf will simply let him go.
If you manage to get Jacob to the point where the Hacketts sling him in the cage, that gives you one last major hurdle to get over: the truly obnoxious fusebox puzzle.
Laura will always destroy the fusebox in Chapter 9, which will always result in the cage doors opening when the power’s cut. If Jacob is still in the cage at the time, this will result in his death unless you let Laura shoot the other werewolf, who turns out to be Nick.
To save both Jacob and Nick, choose to help Jacob, and never pick the “abandon” option. You’ve got three tries to input two combinations that will open Jacob’s cage.
Throwing breakers #1 and #2 will open the first door, and breakers #2 and #3 will open the second. Throwing breakers #3 and #4, conversely, will open the other door in the room and end the sequence early.
Once he’s out, Ryan will send Jacob off to find his own way back through the mines. You won’t see Jacob again until Chapter 10, when you’ll see a short scene with him in the woods by the lodge. If there’s nothing else going on, he’ll be alone here.
What to Do With Emma
There are two opportunities over the course of the game for Emma to get infected with lycanthropy. The first is to make a certain set of choices when she’s fleeing from Max in the treehouse in Chapter 4; the second is to not have a firework on you when she’s trying to get to the lodge in Chapter 6.
The first one here is the one that matters, and it’s also the less obvious of the two. If Max is the one to infect Emma, then you can cure her by shooting Chris as Ryan in Chapter 9. If she’s infected in Chapter 6, then due to how the curse works, she’ll still be a werewolf after Chris dies and you won’t be able to get Nobody’s Fool.
In order to get Emma infected in Chapter 4, be sure to grab the fireworks in Chapter 2. When she reaches the treehouse in Chapter 4, get her safely to the end of the chapter, when she tries to reel in the zipline from the treehouse’s roof.
Go slowly at first (above), then take the “Speed up?” interrupt. Afterward, reel in the zipline and jump for it. If you pass the subsequent QTE, Emma will escape to the other side of the lake, but the werewolf will get a swing in on her.
You’ll know that you’ve successfully activated this plot branch if, when Emma and Jacob subsequently meet up at the lakeside in Chapter 6, she mentions that the werewolf bit her.
Later, at the firepit, be sure to grab the remaining firework and matches from near the campfire.
Depending on your choices on your way to the lodge, you can either use that firework as a distraction or a weapon, and either way, Emma will hole up in the minivan.
In Chapter 8, a wolfed-out Emma will proceed to leap out of the van. What she does after this point is irrelevant as far as Nobody’s Fool goes, but it’s difficult to stop her before she kills somebody. If you’re trying to keep as many characters alive as possible, this is worth keeping in mind.
After this, in Chapter 9, have Ryan shoot and kill Chris. Since Chris bit Max and Max bit Emma, this will cure Emma’s lycanthropy.
Now, instead of Jacob being alone in the woods in Chapter 10, he’ll be able to meet a blood-caked Emma for an honest conversation.
Your goal in this scene is for Jacob to tell Emma that he sabotaged the van, thus setting up most of the events of the game. In my run, I was offered two choices, between Sarcastic/Honest and Bitter/Remorseful.
Choosing Honest, then Remorseful got Jacob to confess and unlocked the achievement. On a subsequent test run, I was also able to get a confession out of him with Sarcastic, then Bitter, but it did lead to a very different overall conversation. Pick whichever you prefer, and it should be enough to get the achievement to unlock.
