Fallout 4 Crafting, Customization and Modding Details Revealed

September 16, 2015 by Ian Miles Cheong

Bethesda has a new video sharing details about the crafting, customization and modding elements of the game.

In any recent Bethesda game, players will find tons of junk that they know not what to do with. Thanks to the implementation of new crafting and creation systems, Fallout 4 will differ from its predecessors and offer players the opportunity to use all of this junk.

Speaking in a newly released video, Bethesda's Todd Howard, director of Fallout 4, says that the game's extensive crafting system will allow players to break down and salvage anything they find and use it to make new items or construct new buildings for their base.

"The main gist of it is that we have all this junk around the world. It sort of started like if you look at alchemy in Skyrim, but imagine that was on everything," he said.

Howard cited a baby bottle as an example of the junk you'll find in the early game. It might not seem like much, but as you play through the game, you may come to discover some use for the baby bottle because it might contain a part you need to make something else.

"Not everything has components. You don’t have anything that just has like, 'my only existence is I am worth two caps.' We have nothing like that," added Howard.

He says that when the team was developing Skyrim, the developers spent a lot of their time figuring out how to balance the economy and prevent players from exploiting the system to make money. This isn't the case with Fallout 4, he says, because testers playing the game spend more time hoarding junk (for the purpose of salvage) instead of selling it.
