Mass Effect 4: Andromeda Will Likely Support DirectX 12

September 10, 2015 by Ian Miles Cheong

The upcoming Mass Effect: Andromeda will probably support DX12.

DICE's powerful Frostbite engine, used in games like Battlefield 4, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Mirror's Edge: Catalyst and Star Wars Battlefront, is capable of supporting DirectX 12, DICE has said.

Speaking on Twitter, DICE's Technical Director Stefan Boberg said that the engine is fully capable of DX12, but added that he does not know which of their upcoming games will be the first to offer DX12 support.

@CentroXer it already is, no word on which game will be first though 🙂

It's a big deal, but it shouldn't be surprising given that the studio worked closely with AMD on their Mantle technology, itself a forerunner to DX12. Most of their recent games, including the upcoming Star Wars Battlefront, will make use of Mantle, allowing AMD graphics card owners to take advantage of its performance benefits.

We'll more than likely see DX12 support in Mass Effect: Andromeda, which is slated to use the engine. EA's other games upcoming may be updated to support DX12 even if they don't support it at launch. Here's what else to expect from the next Mass Effect.

Mass Effect: Andromeda is slated for a Q4 2016 release.
