One could argue that Sonic The Hedgehog is on a roll right now that it hasn’t been on in decades. After all, it’s had massive success at the box office, is going to be getting a new show via Netflix’s “Sonic Prime”, and the upcoming Sonic Frontiers is supposed to “break new ground” in the video game Sonic world for the better. Though obviously we’ve heard that before… The thing is though that Sonic fans have been asking for something very specific for a long time now and only got it via technicalities. However, a new report says that Sonic Team may be granting their wish at last.
We say that because a new report from industry insider Zippo claims that Sonic Team is working on a new 2D Sonic game. One that is truly 2D apparently and not just 2D view in a 3D world. Though technically he could be wrong on that point, as that’s just a report.
The reason this is exciting for fans is that the last true 2D Sonic game was Sonic Mania, and that wasn’t even made by SEGA! It was made by various fans groups and externals studios and was eventually given SEGA’s seal of approval. SEGA themselves haven’t made a true 2D Sonic game in some time.
Which is why fans have reason to be excited, because if they are going back to that style, it could be really fun. Especially if they build off of what Sonic Mania laid down for them.
The report also states that like the older 2D games, you’ll be able to play as Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles. Now, how far along this game is, and when we might see it is obviously up for debate. And it should be noted t
hat Zippo has been wrong in the past.
But at the very least…there’s hope.
