Activision Confirms New Call of Duty: Warzone for 2022

April 25, 2022 by Carley Garcia

The announcement comes in a new financial report.

Activision Blizzard’s Q1 2022 financial report is an interesting read–especially for those anxious to hear more about a new Call of Duty: Warzone. Many fans have taken to calling the mystery project Warzone 2, and it looks like the game is currently in active development and set for a 2022 release.

The new Call of Duty: Warzone game is being built from the ground up beside the new mainline Call of Duty title, already announced to be a new Modern Warfare. Both are being built on an all-new engine. It’s unclear whether the new mainline title will be a direct sequel to Modern Warfare.

“The Call of Duty teams delivered substantial gameplay improvements for Vanguard and Warzone in the first quarter. Development on this year’s premium and Warzone experiences, led by Infinity Ward, is proceeding very well,” the report reads.

“This year’s Call of Duty is a sequel to 2019’s Modern Warfare, the most successful Call of Duty title to date, and will be the most advanced experience in franchise history. The new free-to-play Warzone experience, which is built from the ground-up alongside the premium game, features groundbreaking innovations to be revealed later this year.”

In September 2021, it was announced that Modern Warfare 2‘s campaign would follow the drug war against Columbian cartels. Several sources claim that the game will see “a grittier take on Modern Warfare 2019’s campaign.”

The new earnings report also noted that Call of Duty‘s “net bookings on console and PC declined year-over-year in the first quarter, reflecting lower premium sales for Call of Duty: Vanguard versus the year ago title and lower engagement in Call of Duty: Warzone.”

In March, Activision announced that Call of Duty: Warzone would be coming to mobile devices. The popular battle royale is currently available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. In April 2021, the title surpassed 100 million active players.

The new Warzone title will be officially revealed later this year.
