PSVR 2 Event Rumored to be Coming Very Soon

March 31, 2022 by Carley Garcia

So much PlayStation goodness, so little time.

Since the PSVR 2 was confirmed by Sony in January, PlayStation fans have been desperate for more news. While certain aspects of the headset’s hardware have been teased–along with its first game, Horizon: Call of the Mountain–the second iteration of PlayStation VR is still hiding plenty of secrets. According to VentureBeat reporter Jeff Grubb, the PSVR 2 might be getting its very own dedicated event in “the coming weeks.”

The claim was made on Grubb’s Giant Bomb show GrubbSnax. While the reporter didn’t specify an exact timeframe, he noted that many developers had the opportunity to try out the PSVR 2 at Game Developers Conference last week.

During the CES 2022 conference, Sony showed off the system’s unique new Sense controllers, HDR OLED display with 2000 x 2040 pixels per eye, and improved hardware. Four cameras in the headset will track a player’s space without an external webcam, and the inclusion of haptic feedback will allow players to “feel a character’s elevated pulse during tense moments, the rush of objects passing close to the character’s head, or the thrust of a vehicle as the character speeds forward.”

Earlier this month, Sony filed a patent for “Positional Haptics via Head-Mounted Peripheral,” which may refer to a system of haptic sensors in the PSVR 2 headset. This would measure the player’s head relation to objects putting out sound in a game. Another recently filed patent by Sony implies that the PSVR 2 will use gaze tracking to position the HUD rather than head movements as previously thought.

The PSVR 2 could potentially release during Q1 of 2023, though this has not been confirmed by Sony. This release window is likely due to the shortages continuing to impact the electronics industry. Without more PlayStation 5 owners, the headset may suffer lost sales and further alienate those who still haven’t managed to purchase one of the elusive Sony consoles.
