Masahiro Sakurai Reveals Insights Into Super Smash Bros Ultimate Trailers!

March 31, 2022 by Todd Black

The true Ultimate collection

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

The Super Smash Bros franchise is ultimate built upon two things, having very tight gaming mechanics that keeps people coming back for more battles, and…the roster. While that second one may not sound surprising, it’s more nuanced than that. Because ever since the original, each new Smash Bros game has added new characters to make the game more expansive and more fun. But ever since the arrival of Solid Snake and Sonic in Super Smash Bros Brawl, trailers have been used to help usher in these new arrivals. Masahiro Sakurai broke down last week the trailers of Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS, and today, he posted a talk about the trailers for Ultimate.

Much like last time, he went trailer by trailer and talked about every new addition and how he made them special. Including the reveal trailer for Inkling and how the Smash logo appearing before it “was met with a tremendous reaction”. Or how the Ridley trailer was designed to be scary, and that he actually wanted it to be more intense!
He also talked about how he tried to put a lot of characters from the main roster that had been in Smash Games before in other trailers to help build them up. Like Luigi in the Simon Belt trailers, or King Dedede and Duck Hunt Dog in the King K. Rool and Banjo-Kazooie trailers. He didn’t want the OG characters to be left out basically.

Masahiro Sakurai also talked about the various teams who worked on the trailers like the Animal Crossing team doing the one for Isabelle, or having the Bandai Namco squad doing the trailer for Terry Bogard, and a special team doing the anime-style bits for Joker and Byleth.

All in all, it’s a fascinating insight into a much beloved gaming title.
