There are certain “unspoken rules” when it comes to success that many are familiar with, and one of the biggest ones by far is that if you have a successful IP, you try and do all that you can with it. For video games, that usually means getting a sequel title, or a spinoff title when appropriate. And then if you want to branch off into something else? You can certainly try that. For the hit title Elden Ring, things are apparently heading in that direction if FromSoftware is to be believed.
The reason we say that is…they told us that themselves. Yes, in a special press release document, FromSoftware’s team that worked on the game talked about the success of the title. Not the least of which is the 12 million units that it sold in a month. CEO Hidetaka Miyazaki had some thanks to give on that front:
“It’s astonishing to see just how many people have been playing “Elden Ring.” I’d like to extend our heartfelt thanks on behalf of the entire development team.”
But as for what happens with the IP as a whole, that’s where things get interesting:
“Please look forward to more of ‘ELDEN RING’ as an IP (characters and other intellectual property) in hopes of expanding beyond the realm of games.”
With “beyond the realm of games” being specifically stated, it’s not hard to imagine the kinds of things that they might go and do. The most viable options for them as of right now might be books or comics in order to help flesh out the lore of the game more (something that fans would no doubt appreciate). Or, they could go and make an Elden Ring anime to see if its hard-hitting gameplay loop translates there.
It’s all up to FromSoftware now, and that’s not exactly a bad thing.
