Elden Ring Sells 12 Million Copies Worldwide

March 16, 2022 by Carley Garcia

The hype isn’t going to settle down any time soon.

Elden Ring being a smash-hit isn’t exactly a surprise, but the speed at which the open-world RPG has become a piece of gaming history is staggering. After years of slowly building hype and metric tons of marketing materials, the game launched late last month to unrivaled fanfare. Now, FromSoftware has released a statement confirming that the game has racked up 12 million sales globally in just over two weeks. This includes over 1 million copies sold in Japan alone.

“It’s astonishing to see just how many people have been playing Elden Ring,” the president and CEO of FromSoftware Hidetaka Miyazaki said in the release. “I’d like to extend our heartfelt thanks on behalf of the entire development team.

Elden Ring is based on a mythological story written by George R. R. Martin. We hope players enjoy a high level of freedom when adventuring through its vast world, exploring its many secrets and facing up to its many threats.

Thank you for your continued support.”

The President and CEO of Bandai Namco, Yasuo Miyakawa, also left a comment.

“I would like to use this opportunity to give my thanks to all our fans who have brought Elden Ring into their gaming life. I am very proud to have been involved in bringing such a wonderful and fantastic game to life with FromSoftware, under the guidance of Director Miyazaki, and with George R. R. Martin,” Miyakawa said.

“Much effort was placed into creating Elden Ring so that we could exceed the expectations of our fans worldwide. In like manner, we will continue our efforts in expanding the brand beyond the game itself, and into everyone’s daily life.”

According to GSD data obtained by GameseIndustry.biz, this figure makes Elden Ring the most successful “new IP launch” since the 2016 Ubisoft title The Division.

Elden Ring was officially released worldwide on February 25 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Two days prior to release, the game became the highest-rated game ever on Opencritic.
