It would be inaccurate to call Dark Souls and its predecessor, Demon Souls, JRPGs simply because they were developed in Japan. Both titles are akin to the difficult and unforgiving roguelikes and action RPGs devised by Western game developers.
Borrowing elements from hardcore games like IVAN (Iter Vehemens ad Necem) and more than a few subtle nods to the medieval fantasy anime Berserk, Dark Souls is certain to please even the pickiest fans of the fantasy genre. Make no mistake, Dark Souls isn't about high elves and faerie magic. It's as grim as it gets and only the most sadomasochistic players need apply.
Its developers at From Software and its publishers Namco Bandai have just released a new trailer to herald the game's release on September 22 in Japan, exclusive to the PlayStation 3. The trailer contains nothing but gameplay footage from within the Dark Souls, which should be a sight for the sore eyes of anyone looking forward to playing the game.
