Capcom Launches A Countdown Website, But For What?

February 14, 2022 by Matt Cook

Any guesses?

Today, Capcom launched a mysterious countdown page on its website. The page is a seven-day countdown that will expire on Monday, February 21. The countdown will end at precisely 3 pm Japan time on Monday. That’s 7 am CET, 6 am GMT, 1 am EST and 10 pm on Sunday for PST. So the question is, what is it counting down to?

It’s a risky move to have a countdown clock in gaming. Gamers typically like to get their hopes up and it’s rare that a countdown clock actually meets expectations. That being said, there are a few franchises that are likely candidates. This week, the Capcom Pro Tour is coming to an end. The Capcom Pro Tour is one of the biggest fighting game events and Street Fighter V: Champion Edition is the current flagship game. Capcom could be announcing the next Street Fighter game following the hype of the tournament. Capcom has already confirmed that it will be revealing the next game in the series at some point this year.

Another contender is the rumored Resident Evil 4 remake. While the remake still isn’t officially confirmed, there has been an increase of leaks and rumors surrounding the game in recent weeks. A report from last week stated that the game is in active development and should be revealed this year. Another Resident Evil possibility is DLC for the immensely popular Resident Evil Village. Capcom announced that it was developing DLC for the game at E3 2021 but nothing more was said and nothing was shown. Capcom has been quiet on the DLC front since then. It’s possible that Monday’s announcement is related to that long-awaited DLC. A full reveal and release date could be in order.

Of course, the countdown could also be for any one of the many other popular Capcom franchises. It could also be a nothing burger that hypes fans up only to let them down. Let’s hope it isn’t that.
