Nintendo finally featured Fatal Frame 5, renamed as Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water, on their Treehouse Live Day 3. At the onset, they have confirmed the game is rated M. Full details on the game follow below.
Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water is the fifth game in the series, and it focuses on the black water emanating from Mount Hikami, that is causing people to disappear.
The game switches between three protagonists, and will have you exploring an inn, a shrine filled with life sized dolls, as lake of dead priestesses, an underground cave used for human sacrifices, and other mysterious areas. You can get more details from our earliest previews here and here.
The objective is to investigate Mount Hikami and stay alive as long as you can. You want to stay dry as much as possible, as being immersed in the black water can prove fatal.
As indicated before, the Gamepad controller serves as your Camera Obscura, the game’s signature gameplay mechanic. You take a picture right as a ghost attacks you to stop them in their tracks completely. With the gyro controls, instead of using the analog stick, you can turn the Gamepad sideways and even upside down to get the best Fatal Frame possible.
There is also a Water Gauge, that serves to indicate how much you have been poisoned by the black water. It can take your health directly, and also come with other status effects.
You can watch gameplay of Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water above. If you pay attention, you may notice it has the Soft Physics engine from Dead or Alive 4, giving the appearance of soft skin. The game will be releasing to the US and Europe in Fall 2015.
