New Street Fighter V Mechanics Detailed

June 11, 2015 by Michael Fossbakk

It’s all about the V.

New mechanics for Street Fighter 5, the upcoming mainline entry in the Street Fighter series from Capcom, were detailed in a blog post on the PlayStation Blog Thursday.

Most notable of the new mechanics are V-Triggers and V-Skills, the latter of which does not dip into your V-Gauge. Examples of V-Skills are things like Chun-Li using her Rankyaku to jump forward at a lower trajectory or M. Bison using his Psycho Reflect to grab a fireball out of the air and throwing it back at double the speed.

V-Triggers, on the other hand, do consume your V-Guage, but are meant to be used to push “your character to the limits of their martial prowess.” Once a player’s V-Guage is full, simply press the heavy buttons together, and the character’s V-Trigger is activated. As an example, when Ryu uses his V-Trigger he is able to charge his Hadoken for extra hits on the enemy, as well as break an opponent’s guard more easily. Other examples of V-Trigger include M. Bison using his Psycho Power to enhance his special moves or Nash using his Sonic Move teleport to instantly close the gap between himself and his opponent.

The V-Gauge can also be partially spent on V-Reversals, a move which will counter an opponent’s attack and knock them backwards at the same time. This is done by press forwards and all three punches or kicks (depending on the character). However, it should be noted that not all V-Reversals function the same way.

“Some knock the opponent down completely, while some cause the players to switch sides,” the blog post reads.

Street Fighter 5 was announced last year to be in development for Windows PC and PlayStation 4. It is expected to be released in early 2016.
