Battlefield 2042 Getting New Event, New Map in Season One

December 6, 2021 by Carley Garcia

Will new content help bring the failing title back to life?

During the first few weeks of release, Battlefield 2042 has been torn apart by critics and players alike, with this newest title also managing to become the lowest-rated in the franchise. While developers have attempted to fix numerous issues with the first major patch implemented last week, the start of the title’s first season is also introducing new content in an attempt to lure back players and improve its abysmal reputation. Following the standard model of regular content updates in seasons that last a few weeks each, Season One details are still few and far between–but DICE has finally dropped a few hints about what to expect when the new content drops in early 2022.

In an interview with GameSpot, DICE has revealed that a new map, called Exposure, is coming in the new season. Commenting that it will “take map design to a whole new level,” this could mean that the new addition will be more infantry-focused–something that the community has been asking for since the title was released on November 19. As with subsequent seasons, one new Specialist will be added to the game, along with new vehicles and weapons. None of these have been detailed quite yet, so it’s a waiting game to find out whether this will be enough to appease the masses.

Battlefield 2042 will see its first limited-time event later this month, bringing 64-player variants of Conquest and Breakthrough to PC, PS5, and Xbox SEries X/S. This will be the first time that PC and current-gen players can enjoy these smaller maps with lower player counts, though this is the default for last-gen consoles.

The Battlefield franchise is going through some major shake-ups, with Respawn Entertainment co-founder Vince Zampella taking the helm. Halo co-creator Marcus Lehto is also working on expanding the narrative, storytelling, and further character development.

Battlefield 2042 was released on November 19, 2021, on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. The title has not been well-received, with a flood of negative user reviews uploaded on the day of its release and further decreasing sales.
