Far Cry 6 Devs Points To Background Applications For Poor PC Gameplay Performance Rather Than DRM

November 1, 2021 by Dennis Patrick

Ubisoft is not pointing the finger at DRM but other random third-party software.

When it comes to PC gaming, there are several different elements to make note of when playing games. First, you have a wide range of components and configurations. However, even if you meet all the system requirements for a video game, you can still deal with some performance issues. There are several reasons why you might see a drop in performance. But we have seen a common culprit pop up as the issue. DRM, such as the popular Denuvo security measure, has been one of the background services running in select video games which can hurt performance.

We have seen several cases where this DRM is removed which gives a notable performance increase. That has left some players pointing to Denuvo as being a problematic service for PC gaming. Recently, Ubisoft has taken to the internet and issued instructions on eliminating some of the interference you might be experiencing. If you found performance problems in games like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla or Far Cry 6, it could be Microsoft services or other third-party software running in the background.

That’s the official stance Ubisoft has right now. According to Ubisoft, the way to fix this is to disable programs and perform a clean boot on your PC system. But, of course, there are not that many players buying into this being the main problem. While you can find resources being taken up by your PC from other services running in the background, most are still pointing at DRM. Overall, DRM is a necessary restraint for video games in some studios’ eyes.

With DRM, the game can fight back piracy. However, normally it’s only a matter of time before pirates can remove DRM and make the game accessible online for free. Meanwhile, some players may find that removing DRM would not hurt those that already had plans of purchasing the game. There are arguments to be made on both sides, but it’s clear that players are frustrated to see Ubisoft not point out DRM like Denuvo as being one of the issues.
