If you never played Maplestory in its prime, you were missing out on quite the experience. Maplestory offered players a fun and vibrant world. The game never took itself too seriously, and there's something to be said for that. There are so many MMOs and such that try to go down the dark and dreary path when it's obvious that formula just doesn't work. I think I speak for a lot of people when I say half the fun of an MMO is exploring the game world and seeing what all there is to do. If that game world is boring, then you're not going to keep anyone around for any length of time. Look at World of Warcraft, for instance. The game features a cartoon-like art style and frequently throws jokes around with the players.
If a new trailer for Maplestory 2 is any indication, N Square – the game's developer – will be looking to provide more of that same feel-good gaming vibe. The trailer looks like an anime of sorts, but then again, so does the first Maplestory. In fact, this trailer might be a little too 'out there' for our taste, but we have our bets hedged on Maplestory 2. We know that it won't ask too much of the player and that it will keep things lighthearted, which is a lot to ask in today's gaming environment. Too often we forget that video games were made for fun, though their importance in competition and storytelling is very important.
