There are countless cult classic video game titles out there. Unfortunately, not all of them ever get a sequel or a remake. For years that seemed to be the case for Double Fine’s Psychonauts. After releasing in 2005, the game had a following. Still, it wasn’t anything to really persuade the company to deliver a sequel. Things have obviously changed with Double Fine announcing today that their Psychonauts 2 video game title has reached gold status. This may mean that there won’t be any new, unexpected delays. However, that’s not a guarantee as we can look at titles such as Cyberpunk 2077, which was still getting delays after going gold.
As mentioned, Psychonauts had a following, and it continued to grow after its launch. However, things didn’t really pick up enough to get a sequel out into the marketplace. It wouldn’t be until years later that crowdfunding campaigns blew up that Double Fine attempted the sequel. Alongside the announcement, Double Fine also took to Fig in hopes of raising enough money for development. Fortunately, the campaign surpassed their expectations, and development was underway. Now the development studio has taken to Twitter to unveil the game has reached the gold milestone status.
Going gold means that the studio has reached a build deemed ready for mass production on discs for those unaware. That usually means that the release date given is more or less set. Of course, there’s always the potential for a delay. Chances are, if anything, we’ll see a day one patch update. Finally, fans will get the next big Psychonauts installment they have been waiting for since the original 2005 title release.
Overall, the game will once again put players into the role of the beloved protagonist Raz. This is also a platform title that will take place after the events of Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin. That particular title was a VR installment released back in 2017. Psychonauts 2 is currently launching on August 25, 2021, for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S platforms.
