These are some general tips for playing the Crucible in Destiny. Bungie has designed the game to be played in a very specific style. Playing by these unwritten rules is the difference between victory and defeat.
1. Know your Guardian.
Destiny has more player customization than previous Bungie games, and Bungie did not do this casually. Familiarize yourself with your loadouts’ strengths and weaknesses, and always play to your strengths. Players who try to skip this simple step will be in for a painful experience.
2. Use your Super.
Bungie designed the Supers to be used, not saved. There is nothing to gain from saving the Supers indefinitely. They don’t get more powerful or make that much of a difference in the harder battles. Think of the Supers as stat boosts instead of free kills, and be mindful that when situations come up where you can make the most out of them, that you use them.
3. Stay together.
You will want to be close enough to your teammates to give each other safe zones to retreat to, but far enough so that enemies see you as separate targets.
4. Don’t get greedy.
A frequent mistake even experienced players make is to chase down enemies the moment they drop their shields. When you do this, you leave your safe zone and enter zones where they are in controls. Enemies can always have a shotgun waiting around to take you out if you do. Don’t get caught up in the thrill of the chase, and remember that the tide of battle can always turn against you.
5. Use your radar.
The radar tells you the general location your enemies are in, as well as whether they’re in the same level as you vertically. Learn to incorporate checking the radar constantly into your playstyle, to make the most of this information.
6. You can crouch.
Again, this is a basic and simple detail you can forget in the heat of battle. Crouching will allow you to drop out of your enemies’ radar briefly, giving you opportunities to get them off their game. It’s not an indefinite effect, but with smart play it’s a very useful ability.
7. Prioritize your targets.
There is no simple hard and fast rule here, but you definitely do not want to go after targets unplanned. There are some useful things you can consider:
· Take out the biggest threat to your ability to shoot first.
· Track down what weapons your enemies use and who they’re going after.
· It’s better to take out one target at a time than spreading it out.
There are a lot of variables at play, and you may eventually have to resort to trial and error to master some areas. If you go into the Crucible without this foresight, however, you won’t be sticking around long.
8. Control the engagement.
You do not want to be in situations where your chances of victory are slightly negative or ambiguous. You want the engagement to be completely in your favor, with your team dealing the most damage, and your opponents’ ability to react is as compromised as possible. Of course, to do this, you need to know your loadouts, prioritize targets, and not get greedy.
9. Shoot the head, unless there are shields.
Precision shots are great for bonus damage. To execute precision shots, land headshots on enemies who don’t have their shields up. If they do still have their shields, you miss out on that bonus, so you’ll want to take them out first. Either way, headshots are an efficient way to play, so you’ll want to take headshots as part of your playstyle.
10. Don’t assume anything.
One last simple rule, that you can forget in the heat of battle, but could make all the difference in the Crucible. Take calculated risks and only do deliberate, planned out actions.
