Starfield is confirmed. The trailer leaked ahead of the Xbox E3 show and was subsequently the first thing shown. The game is going to be released on November 11, 2022, on Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Xbox cloud gaming. It’s also going to be a day one release on Xbox Game Pass. We don’t yet know much about the story, but we don’t need to — this is still an early teaser.
The trailer was leaked ahead of time by the Washington Post, along with a making-of video. The trailer shows some kind of space group of people called “Constellation” exploring what appears to be the moon. The teaser site describes the story thus: “In this next-generation role-playing game set amongst the stars, create any character you want and explore with unparalleled freedom as you embark on an epic journey to answer humanity’s greatest mystery.”
Todd Howard appeared on the Xbox E3 stage introducing the trailer, talking about how Bethesda was creating “a new universe.” We were told the footage was in-game. According to the teaser site, the game is built on a new engine called the Creation Engine 2, which is a first for a Bethesda game in a while. The blurbs also say that the game is only possible thanks to next-gen technology, which would explain why it’s an Xbox Series console exclusive.
We first heard rumors that Starfield would be an Xbox exclusive months ago, and even then it wasn’t exactly a surprise. It’s also not a surprise the company is making it a Day One Game Pass release. Microsoft has previously said that it made the Xbox acquisition primarily to give Game Pass some juice, and you couldn’t ask for more juice than the next Bethesda release being exclusive. Hopefully, we’ll see more of the game soon.
