Sony Online Entertainment has given us a sneak peek at the progress of H1Z1. Today, we get a look at Romero’s Supermarket.
It’s a large, sprawling place, like you would expect from a supermarket in a small town, and post zombie infestation, that place has become bleak, unkempt, and very creepy. It could be a good refuge for you and your party – assuming it’s not populated already, of course.
Fans noticed, and artist Adam Clegg confirmed it. Yes, he was going for the look and feel of Super-Duper Mart, from Fallout 3. Adam also shared that shopping carts and all those other things are getting added to the map next.
.@UrMom306 YES! That's what I was going for, best compliment I could get! Going to add all of the shopping cart goodness next.

Also, and there’s absolutely no subtlety here, the supermarket name is obviously a reference to George Romero, director of many zombie movies and considered the originator of the popular culture zombie as we know them today. In particular, this is reminiscent of Dawn of the Dead, a film which had scenes of zombies roaming a shopping mall aimlessly, playing at emulating the same things they did when they were alive.
This goes without saying, but of course, this is still a WIP. What things and features would you like to see in this supermarket? We imagine it would be ‘fun’ to have a zombie hiding inside, like feasting in a meat locker or something like that. It would also be interesting to have the place filled with rotten spoiled food, and possibly all the actual useful food items (like canned and sealed food) looted and all gone.
H1Z1 is coming Fall 2014 to Windows and Playstation 4. You can get a look at all the screenshots below.
