In an interview with Marcus Smith, one of the developers on the Resistance 3 project explained to us what Insomniac has in store for us.
Showing us a level in the game based in Pennsylvania, we were introduced to some of the new stealth and sniper mechanics. Our main character is trying to make his way to New York to finally put an end to the Chimaera. He said that, “This is a level we really want people to use headphones or a really nice sound system to appreciate the mood.”
The game is based four years after Resistance 2, and the world is quickly becoming a Chimaeran world. Everything from plants to weaponry is different than in the original 1950s era. Mr. Smith reiterated that “The Resistance franchise is set on an alternate history timeline”, which means that at some point the video game's reality took over real life's reality.
They went on to talk about the game's atmosphere, whereupon Mr. Smith said, “We were looking to make the game make you feel hopeless but heroic.” The game is much more bleak and everything from the music to the lighting would remind you more of a horror game than generally perceived first-person shooter elements.
