It’s been at least 2 years since a Tony Hawk game. Tony and Activision have just confirmed that they are working on a new installment of the classic franchise.
Tony first let the news come out in his SiriusXM show Demolition Radio, in the middle of reminiscing about the series. A co-host alluded to having to wear a suit, which sounds most like motion capture, although they did not really elaborate on this. This announcement was later confirmed by Activision separately.
Technically speaking, the last game released was Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD, developed by Robomodo for the Xbox 360. However, it can be said that this was nothing more than an HD rerelease combining the 1st two games. The last true attempt at a new Tony Hawk game was Tony Hawk Shred, which attempted to make use of 7th gen motion controls. It was this game’s poor reception and sales in release (3000 copies in the US in its 1st week, October 2010) that prompted Activision to stop making new games for a while.
So, Activision’s attempts to bring Tony Hawk to motion control did not work out, but will they try again? Or will they come back to traditional control schemes? Is there a chance that Oculus Rift or other VR tech is under consideration? We’ll keep you up to date as the news comes out.
