Star Citizen just broke a new milestone, reaching $ 37 million in crowdfunding. Already the most crowfunded project in history, the project is now pushing that benchmark forward. Funding has basically never stopped since their Kickstarter launched in October 2012.
The last time we chimed in, it was already at $ 31 million last November, a few days after the Kickstarter ended and they moved to doing crowdfunding on their own. So, funding slowed down for a certain period of time, but it seems really unlikely that they could have kept that momentum going anyway. They are already well past the point of requiring additional (large) investor or developer funding.
Of course, with bigger projects come bigger expectations, and so we are now left wondering if Star Citizen might end up with the same issues Broken Age ran into. What we do know for sure is producer Chris Roberts’ reputation speaks for itself. As the man behind Wing Commander, Times of Lore, and his prior curtain call, Starlancer, Roberts is known for delivering deep and engaging game experiences. On the side, as head of Ascendant Pictures Christ produced several Hollywood movies, including Lord of War.
In a letter on their site, under the pretense of being head of a space tech company called Roberts Space Industries, Chris also pointed out that they now have 4,924 Organizations since they put a new system up online. They have added an additional two star systems and raised the final goal to $ 40 million. We hope that Chris and co. deliver with a killer space sim in the end, because only at that point can we safely say that this was the most successful crowdfund of all time.
