Just Cause 2 Multiplayer, a fan mod playable through Steam and given the original developer Avalanche’s blessing, has finally set a public release date: December 16 at 1700 UTC.
Thus far, the mod has been going through several public betas, but now it will finally be available to the public. However, since it is not an official release, the devs are pointing out that it will have several necessary limitations. They will only be able to support versions purchased for Steam, although retail and digital download versions of the Steam game should both work. They are also using the English version of the game, so no guarantees players in Europe will get to try this out.
The name is pretty straightforward: this mod will add multiplayer to Just Cause 2, and it’s all going to be free. Again, since this is a mod, the community will have to make and host their own servers, and the devs will be releasing server binaries soon. Those who want to will be able to setup their own servers and build maps just the way they want it. Those who just want to play will be able to do that as well.
If you are planning to host servers, you will also want to know that 32-bit, 62-bit, Windows, and Linux builds of the server will all be available, so pick your poison. The servers are scripted under Lua, and you will be able to host LAN-only servers. You will also have options to require or disable DLC.
Can’t wait to setup your own servers? Well, you have to, but bookmark this page so you’ll be there as soon as the mod and its server binaries are publicly available.
