The EVE Online community and CCP – the developers behind the space MMORPG – raised $190,890 for the Icelandic Red Cross to help provide relief for the Typhoon Haiyan victims in the Philippines.
The donations from the community worked differently than just providing funds directly to the Red Cross. Instead of donating money directly to the relief effort, EVE Online players raised money through donating in-game currency to the PLEX for GOOD program.
The program collected Pilot's License Extension (PLEX) – an in-game item that represents one month of game time for EVE Online. For every PLEX donated by the community, CCP donated $15 USD to the Icelandic Red Cross.
The community donated 12,726 units of PLEX which equals 1060 years of game time.
