Aonuma’s Next Wii U Legend Of Zelda Won’t Be Traditional

October 4, 2013 by Ryan Parreno

Aonuma also elaborates on its relationship with Wind Waker HD, what makes a game traditional, and what makes it a Zelda game.

The Legend of Zelda series showrunner Eiji Aonuma was candid about the new upcoming Zelda game for the Wii U, explaining that it will flout conventions and won’t be traditional.

He discussed the new game’s relationship with Wind Waker HD. They have actually been deep in work at it for a while, and used the HD features from the unrevealed game to Wind Waker. Since Wind Waker is a remake, there were natural limits to what they could accomplish with the Wii U Gamepad. The new game will make more use of the console’s unique selling point.

Wind Waker HD is also influencing the new game. Wind Waker allows you to view the map on the GamePad, making it more comfortable, since it’s easier to navigate around. Aonuma believes they can do it in more places than the ocean as well. He is looking at what parts of Wind Waker HD were fun to play, to bring them over as well.

Aonuma elaborates on his statement that he is tired of making Zelda. It’s not that he no longer wants to make Zelda games, but that he feels that they should not be stuck to the long-established Zelda conventions. In his words, if they can’t make changes to the franchise, they can’t make something new. A Link Between Worlds was made with this mindset, and so will the new game.

And then Aonuma goes deep. In his mind, something is traditional when it copies previous works, but when you keep doing that, the derivativeness of it makes it less and less unique. His intent is to make more parts of the new games more and more unique.

Lastly, Aonuma admits the changes he is bringing into the Zelda games is making him very excited. He’s even considering changing some base assumptions of the games, such as Zelda being a princess, or whether Link and Zelda should be in these games at all.
