Megaman Creator Keiji Inafune Kickstarters Mighty No. 9

September 1, 2013 by Ryan Parreno

Funding rapidly growing for side-scroller announced at PAX.

Veteran game creator Keiji Inafune today announced a new Kickstarter project evoking the look and feel of Megaman, called Mighty No. 9. The project is rapidly amassing funds as we speak, now having earned $ 400,000 of its $ 900,000 goal.

Mighty No. 9’s pitch is as a Japanese side-scrolling action game that combines 3rd and 4th console generation gameplay with modern touches, including up to date graphics, coming to the PC. The production team includes Comcept, Inafune’s personal company, and Inti Creates, who has been making Megaman games in the Zero and ZX series longer than the original Capcom team made the first generation Megaman games. Inti Creates also worked on Megaman 9 and 10.

The resemblance/homage/copying of the classic series cannot be denied. The game protagonist is a robot in blue armor named Beck, who can take powers from other robots and has a female partner named Call. All the robots in the world are hit by an unknown virus, except Beck, whose job is now to take everyone else out. Beck has more ways to take other robot’s powers than Megaman ever did, being able to even break apart and reconstruct himself. Inti Creates changed things up in Megaman Zero with Cyber Elves, so they may come up with something similar, or even more radical than that for the new game.

Many of the creators on this project are veterans who worked on Megaman games, such as Naoya Tomita, Manami Matsumae, and Koji Imaeda, as well as a large number of American partners, such as 8-4 Ltd, 2 Player Productions, and Ben Judd. The game will be made with the cooperation of the American and Japanese groups so that fans from both parts of the world will enjoy the game together.

Inafune made this announcement in his PAX Prime panel today. Immediately soon after, the Kickstarter page went online and immediately started taking pledges. I personally saw it go past $ 100,000 in its first two hours live, and if you stayed at the page, you could see the number just keep rising in real time. Clearly, Megaman fans took notice and are now showing their support. It may very well reach its initial goal within the next two or three days, with even the biggest stretch goal ($ 2.5 million to port to Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii U) well within sight.
