EverQuest Next, Sony Online Entertainment’s next-generation MMO that’s looking to push the genre forward in a few creative ways, won’t be making a splash on consoles early on. Although the development team has experience on the PlayStation 4, the rebirth of MMO’s will launch on the platform that makes the most sense for the genre – the PC.
David Georgeson, producer for Sony Online Entertainment, told Eurogamer that Sony’s next-generation console is absolutely on his team’s radar. However, the PC is where the game will make a home when it actually releases in the far-flung future.
"We're very serious about this being a PC-orientated launch," Georgeson said at an SOE Live.
"Now, you're dumb not to explore other options with a business of this type, but we're very serious about developing for the PC. You know the company knows a lot about the PlayStation 4 – look at DC Universe Online and Planetside 2 – so we have a lot of people becoming extraordinarily knowledgeable with that box. We're not adverse to the idea, but we're not going down that path yet."
The recent gameplay debut had the industry abuzz, and while the label “MMO” seems to turn people away from most projects these days, SOE is making sure that things will be different when Next makes its debut. If it jumps onto the next-generation hype train and takes advantage of the PlayStation 4’s unique feature set and graphical capabilities, it might just have a chance to break into new, more-varied audiences.
