It looks like the Battle Royale behemoth that is Fortnite isn’t going to be stopping anytime soon – thanks to the lucrative monetization system that Epic Games has used in the third-person title, the game has earned over 1 billion USD in revenue from in-game purchases.
A research firm known as SuperData broke the news, further adding that they believe that the Battle Royale genre is set to grow even more this year. While total revenue for the battle royale genre was just $1.7 billion in 2017, the SuperData estimates it will get substantially higher in 2018, with a projected revenue $12.6 billion, and even higher in 2019 with a projected revenue of $20.1 billion.
SuperData also analyzed the audience engaging in the Battle Royale, estimating that most of the audience came from shooter games, while some were from roleplaying games and games from other genres.
I suppose it does make sense considering the new markets Fortnite has tapped in with its expansion to other platforms (that and it basically exists as a meme guaranteeing almost permanent virality.) Thoughts? Let us know down in the comments section below.
