Cyberpunk 2077, the upcoming futuristic RPG from CD Projekt Red, will feature multiplayer. The managing director for the game – Adam Badowski – told Eurogamer in an interview:
“It will be a story-based RPG experience with amazing single-player playthroughs, but we're going to add multiplayer features.”
Naturally, the next step was to find out if this new interest in multiplayer would translate to The Witcher 3, also currently in development at the studio. But all Badowski would say was “We're thinking about something”, which is about as informative as if he had said nothing at all.
Whether or not The Witcher 3 includes some form of cooperative or competitive play, we can at least be sure that CD Projekt Red won't follow Bethesda's lead and turn their “even larger than Skyrim” game into an MMO. When the interviewer at Eurogamer asked Badowski if there was a chance of that, he apparently chuckled and dismissed the idea as counter to the fiction. The Witcher 3 has one, pre-defined hero, as opposed to multiple classes like in the Elder Scrolls games or – closer to home – Cyberpunk 2077.
Cyberpunk 2077 is still very early in its development, so it would be silly to theorise about a Cyberpunk MMO at this stage. But Badowski does say that the game “will have different character classes”. We also know that the game will be open world.
At the moment, however, CD Projekt Red is primarily focused on The Witcher 3, which will launch for next-gen consoles including the PS4 in 2014.
