Earlier today, we were treated with the first tried and true gameplay video of Kickstarter-funded Wasteland 2. The last portion of in-game material we saw from this game came in the form of camera functionality on September 6.
The inXile title achieved funding success on April 17, 2012, where it garnered nearly $3 million from the gaming populace. What really made this feat so amazing was that they were only asking a meager $900,000 for development of the entire game. This same success had previously found its way to other titles, of which the most notable was Double Fine’s adventure title.
This video begins with various factions from around the Wasteland interrupting one another via radio transmission, all vying for your allegiance.
After this introduction, video cuts to Development Director Chris Keenan showing us how the game will work, discussing first the customizable HUD and other utility-based features.
Keenan then proceeds into what is called “The Agricultural Center,” where we are shown combat for the first time. At this point, Keenan dispatches various critters and shows us how the experience system works, noting that it was because of the Kickstarter backers they included classic traits such as luck, speed and others.
Keenan then comes across a locked door, and shows us how the skill system will work, attempting to use his main character to unlock the same door. He fails, noting that, “In character creation he wasn’t necessarily specced with a very high lockpick skill.” Keenan then switches to another character more specialized for this kind of activity and makes his way through the door.
This all occurs within about eight minutes of the video starting. It’s packed and ripe with content.
