Top Upcoming Survival Horror Video Games of 2018

2018 is quickly approaching and with it will come a slew of new video game titles to look forward to playing. With that said, now’s a good time to start marking down what video games to keep an eye on when they officially launch next year. Let us lend a hand, in this list, in particular, we’re going over the top horror video games launching in 2018.

Scorn

Developer: Ebb Software

The horror title Scorn is all about immersion with the video game tossing players into a creepy atmospheric world that’s filled with grotesque creatures. One of the ways that Ebb Software is hoping to immerse players into this nightmarish world is by playing the entire game without any cutscenes. In fact, according to the past Kickstarter campaign page, Scorn doesn’t have a conventional plot but instead allows players to interpret the events and themes.

Another interesting aspect that will hopefully allow players to go through Scorn without being taken out of the gameplay experience is that the title will not have a HUD displays. Everything within the world is living and as players progress through the game, new areas will open up, however, don’t expect Scorn to hold your hand. You’ll have to think carefully about how to complete tasks and accomplish game goals.

Allison Road

Allison Road gained attention from the video game industry as a spiritual successor to P.T., the playable teaser for the now cancelled video game Silent Hills. While first being declared cancelled on June 4, 2016, the video game would enter development once again on August 22, 2016.

Gameplay is similar to P.T., where players will go through the game in a first-person perspective as they uncover clues and defeat a supernatural entity. As for the overall story, developers are keeping gamers mostly guessing as to what they can expect.

From what we know so far, the game will have players taking on the role of an unnamed protagonist as he roams around his home with suggestions that his family was a victim of a heinous crime. As the game progresses, players will have to fight against an unknown force that could very well be his family from the afterlife.

Hunt: Showdown

From development team Crytek comes Hunt: Showdown. Acting as a spiritual successor to Darksiders, Hunt: Showdown has players facing each other in a PvP bounty hunting video game. However, the spin on this title is that the setting takes place in a rural nightmarish Louisiana swampland.

Not only will you be hunting or being hunted by other players, you’ll have to be careful of your surroundings for the lurking monsters. Currently the game is only available as an Early Access title on the Steam platform where developers are hoping to release the full game at some point in 2019. However, gamers seem to be enjoying the game so far though developers have noted that Hunt: Showdown will see a number of changes while its in Early Access.

Moons of Madness

Within Moons of Madness, players take on the role of an astronaut named Shane Newart who begins to battle hallucinations. Throughout the game, players will be tasked with exploring a research station called Trailblazer Alpha while solving puzzles in an attempt to solve the supernatural elements that seem to be surrounding the astronaut. This is also a narrative inspired by the classical works of Lovecraft.

Unfortunately there hasn’t been too many updated regarding the game so we’re curious as to if this title will end up becoming a 2019 release.

The Inpatient

For those who have played Until Dawn and wish to return back into its world then you’ll want to check out The Inpatient. This title just missed being attached to the 2017 year of video game releases as it came out in late January of 2018, delivering fans of Until Dawn a new VR style experience. Exclusively to the PlayStation VR platform, players will be taken back sixty years prior to the events of Until Dawn.

Without spoiling too much of the game, players take on the role of a patient locked inside the Blackwood Sanatorium. Suffering from amnesia, players are fighting to regain long lost memories though you’ll want to make note that the ending of the story will be determined simply by the decisions made throughout the game.

Outlast & Outlast 2

Outlast is a first-person survival psychological horror title by development team Red Barrels. The game follows a freelance investigative journalist named Miles Upshur who is searching out a remote psychiatric hospital.

However, what Miles finds is not only disturbing but dangerous leaving him to fight for his life. Being more of a survival horror title, players are encouraged to use stealth to their advantage while maneuvering over various obstacles. Likewise, a big portion of the game is based on the use of a night vision camera to see what is around the area. However, batteries are required to run the camera forcing players to seek out replacements as they progress through the narrative campaign.

Outlast 2 follows similar game mechanics to the first installment of the survival-horror franchise. Players this time around will take on the role of Blake Langermann, an investigative journalist alongside his wife as they uncover clues to a murder of a pregnant woman.

In their journey, Blake and his wife become separated after their helicopter crashes. Much like the last installment, gamers are not suited with the ability to combat the enemies that lurk about. Instead, our protagonist will mostly have to hide and run away from any nearby danger.

Since Blake is already a cameraman, he is equipped with a more advanced camera that will offer clearer footage, zoom, an audio detection system, and of course night vision. Gamers will still have to hunt down new batteries for the camera when it drains from night vision use just as they did before making it tough to know just when you should put down your camera and when to pick it back up again.

Hello Neighbor

Hello Neighbor is a game that was first released in 2017 for the PC and Xbox One platforms due to an exclusivity deal. Now that the deal has come to an end, players can enjoy the game across the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, iOS, and Android platforms as well.

The game puts players into the shoes of a protagonist that has recently moved into a neighborhood when he discovers his neighbor to be acting strangely. All signs point that the neighbor is keeping something hidden in his basement leaving the players to determine how to gain access.

Players will have to sneak into the house and gather various items that will allow them to gain access into the basement, but they will need to be careful not to be caught. If the neighbor spots the protagonist then they will have to flee to a hiding spot otherwise they will end up back at their home.

Interestingly enough the game’s AI learns of previous gameplay sessions allowing the neighbor to lay down various traps making it difficult to reattempt certain tasks.

Call of Cthulhu: The Official Video Game

We’ve seen other titles in the past release featuring the Call of Cthulhu storyline, but in this particular game, we’re looking at Call of Cthulhu: The Official Video Game from the development team, Cyanide Studio.

Players will be taking the role of Edward Pierce, a former war veteran, and private investigator. Edward finds himself taking on an investigative case where he will attempt to clear up the murder of Sara Hawkins that occurred in Darkwater Island. This is a survival horror title so you can expect a terrifying experience that will leave you running and collecting precious resources such as ammo along the way.
