Projection: First Light Brings Enlightened Puzzle-Platforming to Consoles

October 3, 2017 by Katrina Filippidis

Bask in the mythological glow of a puppet world.

Renowned Australian puppeteer Richard Bradshaw knows a thing or two about shadow puppetry. So to make dusky puzzle-platformer Projection: First Light, independent team Shadowplay Studios turned to him for advice. Shadowplay founder Michael Chu explains the idea for the game stems from his own experiences of growing up:

“The idea behind Projection: First Light went off like a lightbulb in my head when I recalled playing with shadows on a wall as a child…after toying with light manipulation at a game jam, we discovered the concept had a number of wonderful gameplay applications, which we hope to share with the gaming community”

In Projection, players control Greta, a young girl living in a shadow world. She gains possession of a light source which she can bend to her will, conjuring platforms and walls out of shadows. Visually, it does bear similarity to titles like Limbo, Toby: The Secret Mine and even a touch of Orphan, but its themes differentiate it; Greta’s journey is a tale of self-discovery, but also one which charts the history of shadow puppetry as it evolved across China, Indonesia, Turkey, Greece, and 19th century England.

Projection: First Light has a projected release frame for Q2 2018. Previously destined for PC and Mac, it’s now broadening its reach to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Projection: First Light received the honour of being selected for the PAX Aus Indie Showcase.
