A Kickstarter That’s Aimed Squarely At Old School Sega Racing Fans

January 22, 2013 by Matt Hawkins

At last, we’re finally getting our Virtua Racing 2/Daytona USA 3/home version of Scud Race

If you're a longtime Sega fan, then you no doubt have found memories of power-sliding for hours on end, either in Virtua Racing, Daytona USA, or any of the numerous arcade racers that helped cemented their dominance in that genre throughout the 1990s.

Many years have since passed and the genre is a shell of its former self (not helping is how arcades are no longer what it used to be as well). Yet the memories lives on, along with the wish that there had been a Virtua Racing 2, Daytona USA 3, even a home port of Scud Race (one was planned for the Dreamcast, but was cancelled).

And one person, a game designer who resides in Athens, Greece and who goes by the handle Pelikan13, is trying to make that all happen, with just one nostalgia-tinged effort called aptly enough: The 90's Arcade Racer.

How? Via Kickstarter, naturally:

As the creator explains:

This is a an arcade racing game for PC, Mac, Linux and hopefully OUYA based on games that I loved playing in the arcades growing up. You could say it's inspired by those games, maybe a tribute to them or simply a rip off, any of these could be true!

The three that ate up most of my coins where Scud Race, Daytona USA and Indy 500, my goal is to recreate the feeling these games evoked from players by maintaining the colorful, vibrant look and sense of speed but with modern visuals and car handling models.

Any seasoned Sega can tell you that it definitely feels like the real thing. The recently launched campaign is looking for £10,000, and with 26 days to go, it's already at the £4,361 mark. Clearly there is a demand for the game. To nab a digital copy for PC, Mac, or Linux, it costs as little as £10, which is around $16 US.
