The popular Finnish children's book series Moonintroll, consisting of twelve tomes starring the titular character and his friends, can now be enjoyed in an all new way. A new mobile app by LaughLoud:Labs and Dohi Entertainment, aimed at children, players can aide Moonintroll in his tasks as he interacts with the virtual world and takes on adventures, acquainting themselves with his universe at their own pace. Says project manager at LaughLoud:Labs Thomasine Stiernswärd:
"The range of digital applications for younger children is increasing faster and faster, and there is thus a greater need for parents to find safe 'digital playgrounds' for their children. We offer a safe environment in which children can play without being exposed to advertising and without any risk of hidden or further expenses. It's really exciting that we now have the opportunity to work with such a strong brand as Moomin."
The app is now in the Apple store and the company promises more content from children's books in the future. As much as I love books and technology though, I will make note that the press release indicates the game is for 2-6 year olds, a group for the most part can't use an iPad or iPhone and probably, for budgetary purposes, should never be allowed to. We'll see what comes of these well intentioned but perhaps misguided endeavors.
