Whether you love animals or not, it’s hard to deny the popularity of anthropomorphic characters in video games. From Sonic the Hedgehog to Spyro the Dragon, the history of gaming would never quite be the same without their influence. That’s why we’re celebrating these icons by checking out some recent games with animal heroes, starting with foxes.
1. FOX n FORESTS
Currently in development, FOX n FORESTS is a kickstarted 2D platformer starring Rick the Fox. Armed with a magic melee crossbow, he needs to travel through beautiful pixel woodlands, defeating wicked trees and switching seasons to uncover hidden secrets. FOX n FORESTS is expected to release in September 2017 for PC, Mac and Linux.
2. Lucky’s Tale
Lucky’s Tale took 3D platforming to a whole new level by launching as an Oculus Rift exclusive. Playful Corp’s colourful approach to a revered genre saw players hunting down coins, taking on mini-games and navigating through puzzle-filled environments. It was the next best thing to jumping through the TV screen. Lucky’s Tale is out now for free.
3. Super Lucky’s Tale
Announced at E3 2017, Super Lucky’s Tale is the surprise sequel to VR exclusive title Lucky’s Tale. This time around, Lucky’s coming to Xbox One (and Xbox One X) as a Play Anywhere title so it’s playable on Windows 10 as well. Super Lucky’s Tale tasks players with rescuing the Book of Ages from a scheming supervillain called Jinx. It’s due to release on November 7. Interested players can pre-order the game today.
4. Tunic
This isometric low-poly adventure looks positively magical. Set on a series of tranquil islands, Tunic’s hero is a nano-sized fox with a bushy tail, who goes about exploring beautiful, multi-tiered dioramas, defeating enemies, and confronting mythical beings. Tunic is coming out for PC, Mac and consoles in 2018.
5. Stories: The Path of Destinies
Reynardo the fox isn’t your typical hero, because in Stories: The Path of Destinies he gets to repeat his quest over and over again to unlock different endings. It’s a bit like Groundhog Day but with Bill Murray replaced by a fox. There’s also a rebellion, a princess, a traitor, and fast-paced action that we thought was a must-play for gamers who like story focused RPGs. Interested folks can try out Stories: The Path of Destinies for PC and PS4.
6. Never Alone
E-Line Media and Upper One Games teamed up for something truly special back in 2014. Never Alone is one of the few games out there that place a strong emphasis on cultural preservation, and uses its characters Nuna and Fox to digitally record the mythology of the Inuit people. It features both single-player and co-op modes, where players can switch up between Nuna and her arctic fox to solve puzzles and survive the endless blizzard. Never Alone is out for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox One, Wii, and mobile. Get it here.
7. Seasons After Fall
Like FOX n FORESTS, charming indie puzzle-platformer Seasons After Fall also lets you change up the seasons. It differs in its beautiful, painterly visuals and violin coloured soundtrack, and of course, its penchant for fantasy is strikingly obvious. We thought Seasons After Fall was pretty great from an audiovisual perspective, but suffered from lacklustre gameplay. You can judge for yourself today on PC, Xbox On and PS4.
