An Ubisoft presentation given at GDC Europe recently addressed the technological differences between the Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Traditionally, the CPU of each system has been the main piece of hardware looked at, but with the growing use of GPU technology, Ubisoft employee Alexis Vaisse decided to buck the trend. With results like the photo we posted below, we're honestly not surprised.
This photo from the presentation indicates that the Playstation 3 CPU is almost as powerful as both the PS4 and Xbox One. This really strikes us as interesting because there were many times last generation where the Xbox 360 seemed just as powerful as the Playstation 3. All of these were taken from about five MS of computing time and the data was then relegated over for visual representation as a part of the test. This next photo looks at the systems' GPU.
Alright – so there's a pretty substantial difference here. The PS4 GPU looks to tower over other consoles currently out on the market, striking down even the Xbox One by a hefty margin. While this isn't necessarily an endorsement of quality, it certainly makes us under just how much of an edge the Playstation 4 will have over the Xbox One and whether or not that will play a role later on in this console generation. If the Playstation 3's cell processor is any indicator, then we're liable to say no. Sony really believes in their 10 year plan though, even if their handheld platforms like the PSVita and PSP don't really show it.
